What a week! It’s actually been pretty good - welcoming back our friend Lastone from his 2 month trip to Cambodia and hearing how a Buddhist had become a Christian after hearing his testimony, clearing the rubble and debris from the back of our house so the garden is a bit more of, well, a garden! But there was one morning I woke up with some bites…

I assumed at first they must have been from a Mosquito, though I’d not really been bitten like it before. But then over the next few days as I was moving around I kept feeling little pin pricks (like something spiking me) on different parts of my body. Some of the first being on my back, I had to ask Gemma to take a look and then repeatedly through the week to come and squeeze my spots to get the maggots out!!! 🤮 Gross right!?

We weren’t really sure if there were Putzi Fly around Beulah but it turns out there must be. We’ve known of people in other parts of Zambia who’ve left sweaty or damp shirts outside to dry and then when they’ve worn them again ended up with putzi fly, who must have laid their eggs in their clothes, growing in their backs. And we’d heard that to deal with them you needed to put Vaseline over the spots so that the larvae would come to the surface (presumably gasping for air??). But how I ended up with them on my back, arms, legs and ankles I’m really not sure. Anyway, apart from being gross and a bit itchy (sorry if you’re itching now at the thought of it) it really wasn’t that bad.

And at least we popped them all out before we had to go to Lusaka for Abigail’s orthodontist appointment. Her appointment time was at 8.30am on Saturday so, being at least a 6 hour drive away, we set off on Friday. On the way there our fuel warning light came on, though the tank was virtually full. We stopped, phoned our missionary mechanic friend who told us how to pump water out of the fuel filter and reset the warning light (surprisingly straight forward) and then set off again.

We arrived for the appointment to be told Abigail's braces hadn't yet been delivered, so to try again in an hour. Having called back several times we eventually were seen her braces fitted by about 1.30pm. We stayed over night and then today drove back - unfortunately having to pump the fuel filter at least 2 more times on the way (making our return drive more like 7-8 hours) and then finally replacing the whole filter once we got home following a YouTube video. We’re not exactly sure what caused this fuel issue but as the car was serviced only a few weeks ago, we suspect it was more likely a bad batch of dirty or possibly even watered down fuel we were sold. Anyway, we hope tomorrow the problem won’t recur as these days we take a very full carload of kids to school each morning along with Abigail and Hannah!

Also, here's a link to a podcast we listened to and were really encouraged by on our long drive back from Lusaka today. It's about the adventure of mission... and that's what makes everything worthwhile!
